The Chicago born pianist Andrew Hill recorded seven highly acclaimed albums for Blue Note in the mid-60s and became something of a cult legend. But in 1969 he withdrew from the recording and performing scene as a jazz musician and took up a post as composer in residence at Colgate University and later at the Smithsonian. This 1974 recording for SteepleChase is the first one in his five-year break from the jazz scene and the first ever trio recording which was enthusiastically received by critics and his followers.

The history of SteepleChase cannot be told without Dexter Gordon who had spent the prime-time of his life in Copenhagen playing night after night at the packed Jazzhus Montmartre. This is the first of the many studio recordings Dexter made for SteepleChase with his “home” rhythm group at the height of his career.

Long Tall Dexter or Big Dex, as many people remember him fondly, was the first man to apply be-bop on tenor sax and left tremendous influence on the generations to come.

As the Jazz Journal puts it, this album is “ all strong meat – one of the tenor albums of the year, made possible by recording a working group at the height of its powers ”.

Horace Parlan (b. Pittsburgh Jan. 19, 1931) being one of the last American jazz musicians of his generation to settle in Europe has been the resident of Denmark since 1972.

He had been best known for his association with Charles Mingus’s Jazz Workshop before his successful duo recordings with Archie Shepp (SCCD 31079 & 31139) with whom he has been touring major cities in Europe and USA.

This is Horace’s first recording for SteepleChase for which he chose his working group to back him up marking his arrival in Europe.
